I remember the first day I went to the school band room to try out for an instrument. I had written that I wanted to play drums and trumpet, and when the teacher asked why both I replied that I liked notes, but I also liked rhythm. I ended up playing the trombone (yes, I was one of those tall kids that could actually reach 6th position) and continue to play to this day.
That was in the 6th grade. I can still remember the smell of valve oil, the way the music looked, and more importantly the feeling that I got playing music.
Now when I think about the current situation that kids don’t get the opportunity to grow up playing music I cringe. I know that I teach music for a living, and that people do pay for their lessons, but when I see the happy faces, and watch these kids growing up, starting to play in bands and concerts, and even putting out their own CDs…my cringe turns into a big happy smile.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from parents that their kids attitudes have changed for the better, or that they are better at sitting down to do their homework…because music does that magic trick to get you working on songs, reading and getting into a groove of learning.
So parents out there! Do not let the government destroy your child’s bright future. We all know what music does to the development of our children. So, find that private music teacher who will give your child what they need! Support your community’s music teachers. You will thank them forwhat they will offer!!!
